Body Image Double Standards

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGqtMt0zISQ

In this video, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres speaks with Katie Couric about the double standards between men and women and about what the definition of health truly is. Ellen comments on how women are often times with men who don't have "great bodies" and no one sees this as strange, but if the situation is reversed then everyone is surprised. Both genders face pressure from the media and society to be "attractive", but much more emphasis is placed on being slim and beautiful for a women than for a man to be strong and fit. The topic of airbrushing creating impossible standards is also touched upon, and Ellen says that the true definition of beauty and health should be measured in happiness and energy, not your jean size. Ellen DeGeneres is a great role model for women to look to, as she is in the public eye but still stays true to herself as a lesbian woman. She is a great advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual individuals. Society should feature more women like her on the covers of their magazines, someone who advocates for women and does not sexualize herself.
